Self-Understanding in Relationships
Healthy relationships begin with understanding yourself.
We can spend a lot of time trying to understand other people and surprisingly little thinking about ourselves.
What matters to me? What do I need from the people I'm close to? What am I comfortable with? What do I expect from a relationship, and where did those expectations come from?
Some answers are obvious. Others tend to show up through experience. We notice them when something doesn't sit right, when we're disappointed by a response we weren't expecting, or when we find ourselves saying yes while wishing we'd said no.
Our values, needs, expectations, and beliefs all influence the choices we make and the way we relate to other people. We don't always recognise that influence while it's happening.
Understanding yourself often starts with noticing what matters to you, what you need and what influences the choices you make. That awareness can make it easier to communicate what you need, make choices that fit with your values and bring more of yourself into your relationships.
