Family & Friendships

The relationships that shape our lives.

Family and friendships can be some of the most meaningful relationships we have. They can give us connection, belonging and support, while also bringing expectations, differences and challenges of their own.

As we move through life, these relationships change. Friendships grow apart or deepen. Family roles shift. We may find ourselves balancing our own needs with the needs of the people around us, navigating differences in values, or reconsidering what closeness and belonging mean to us.

Understanding these dynamics can help us make sense of our relationships and find ways of staying connected without losing ourselves along the way.

Understanding family & friendship dynamics

The way we relate to family and friends is influenced by many things: our early experiences, family roles, culture, values, expectations, life stage and the groups and communities we belong to.

Sometimes the patterns within these relationships are easy to recognise. Others have been around for so long that they simply feel normal.

The resources here look more closely at these patterns and the ways they can influence belonging, closeness, independence and the choices we make in our relationships.
